Mr. Robert Cole Lawton II

April 8, 1950 ~ November 16, 2022 (age 72)


With heavy hearts, the family of Robert (Robby, Rob, Poppa Tractor, PT) Cole Lawton ll, announce his passing on November 16 after a long battle with lung disease.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Lucille Eads Lawton Rowsey; father, Lt. Col. Robert C. Lawton; step-father, Jack Rowsey; and son, Thomas Warriner Lawton.

He is survived by his son, Robert (Bert) Cole Lawton lll; brother, Ricky Lawton; grandchildren, Erin, Evan, Sydney, and Matthew; nephews, Alex and Mark.

Robby was born in Seattle, WA on April 8, 1950.
He grew up in Lexington, VA, was a proud Boy Scout, achieving life scout status. After high school, he attended Virginia Western Community College in Roanoke. He began his insurance career with Southland Life as a sales agent, later moving to staff manager and a district manager with Jefferson Pilot. He received his bachelor’s degree from Roanoke College in 1984. He dreamed of becoming an OTR truck driver, which he fulfilled, driving for Georgia pacific. He loved jamming gears, chatting with his buddies, big rig trucking, the life. Known as Rough Idle, he enjoyed his CB radios at home as well.  He coached little league and baseball.  Robby enjoyed the outdoors, fishing, hunting, and the family property on the Maury River in Rockbridge County until his health began to fail. He believed in the American Dream, loved Volkswagens, and his family. He marched to his own drum. Your cunning wit, wry humor, piercing blue eyes and the singular, unique person we all knew, will be missed. Dad, PT, Grandpa Rob, there will never be another like you, a one of a kind. We know you are waiting on us to join another hunt, to catch one more fish and all the left chicken breasts you can eat. You will be missed. Over and out!

A celebration of Robert’s life will be held at 11:00 am, Friday, December 9, 2022, at Lotz Funeral Home Roanoke 1001 Franklin Road SW Roanoke, VA 24016 . Burial will be at Evergreen Memorial Park.
