Mr. Thurston Michael Moomaw
September 25, 1943 ~ January 13, 2023 (age 79) 79 Years Old
Thurston Michael Moomaw (Mike) age 79 of Roanoke County VA, passed away January 13, 2023.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Thurston S. Moomaw, and Nellie Ruth Moomaw, and brother John E. Moomaw.
He is survived by his children, Mark Moomaw of Salem, Amy Stone and son in-law Taylor, of Roanoke County: nieces Joanna McCurdy, and husband Chase and great nephews Ben and Max of Ash Park, IL,: and Melanie Hondros and husband Nick and great niece Maria of Roanoke, VA and many cousins and friends and his soap opera watching buddy, Nancy Lawrence.
He was a member of the last class to graduate from William Fleming High School when located on Williamson Road in 1961. He graduated from National Busines College in Roanoke, VA and Upper Iowa University in Fayette, Iowa, where he earned his bachelor’s degree in business. He was in the accounting profession for the 38 years, including 17 years with Ingersoll Rand at the Hollins Virginia plant, where he achieved the position of plant controller.
Until his death he was on the Board of Trustees of Haymakertown Cemetery in Botetourt County Va. He was a volunteer fire fighter with Roanoke County #5 Hollins for 15 years and in 1982 was named firefighter of the year at station #5.
He loved the outdoors and nature. Working in his vegetable garden was one of his pastimes. He would share his harvest with family, neighbors, and wildlife. He liked watching Nascar races, and Richard Petty was his favorite driver. He had a strong belief that no human should go to bed hungry, and within his means he supported food distribution efforts, local nationwide and oversees.
He will be missed by his best pal, his cat Ozzie.
A grave side service will be held at Haymakertown Cemetery on Sunday, January 22, 2023 at 3PM with Pastor Luke Swanson of Trinity Lutheran Church officiating, use 4673 County Club Road, Troutville VA 24175 for the address.
