Mr. Stephen Thomas Gordon

January 30, 1947 ~ April 4, 2019 (age 72) 72 Years Old

Tribute

Stephen Thomas Gordon, 72, of Roanoke beloved husband, father, and grandfather went to be with God. He peacefully succumbed too many years of chronic illness. He was born January 30th, 1947 to the late Joseph Gordon and Maxine Masterson Gordon.

Steve Served as a police officer in Ft. Wayne, Indiana but was retired from sales. He moved to Roanoke with his family in 1983. He was a long time member of St. Mark’s Lutheran Church in Roanoke. He was active in the church working in the food pantry, transporting newly immigrant children to entertainment venues and helping to procure needed items for immigrants that the church sponsored. He worked in several areas of St. Mark’s Social Ministries. Steve enjoyed working with young people everywhere. He instructed acolytes and crucifers in their duties. When he was “up front” serving communion, reading or assisting the pastor behind the scenes, he was happiest. Over the past few years he became unable to do this work but even though he could no longer attend, he remained interested in the activities of the church. Steve had a great sense of humor and he was always making someone laugh. He was our husband, father and grandfather. He loved his family. We are richer for having had him with us. God gave him to us and we surrender him to glory with the knowledge that we will meet again.
Surviving are his wife of 50 years, Cheryl Groendyke Gordon; sons, Scott Gordon, Erik Gordon and wife, Allison; daughter, Janessa Gordon Hatcher and husband, Mike; grandsons, Heath and Dane; his four legged companion, Aurora; grand-dogs, Zak and Tucker.

In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to St. Mark’s Lutheran Church, Social Ministries Fund or the Organ Fund.

The family will receive friends 6-8 pm, Monday, April 8, 2019 at Lotz Funeral Home, 1001 Franklin Road, Roanoke. A celebration of Steve’s life will be held 11 am, Tuesday, April 9, 2019 at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church, 1008 Franklin Road, Roanoke with Pastor James Armentrout officiating. Burial will private.
