Sam King Crockett, 83, of Roanoke, was called home to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on March 31, 2018 after a brief but courageous battle with cancer.
Mr. Crockett was born on March 14, 1935, the son of Edward and Mary Helen Crockett of Bluefield, VA. He is survived by Carol Crockett, his precious wife of 59 years; son Michael Crockett of Roanoke, VA; daughter Patricia Povtak and husband Jeff of Hardy, VA; grandson Jacob Crockett and wife Cheyenne of Roanoke, VA; sister-in-law Mikel Copeland of Roanoke, VA; and brother-in-law Larry Newman and wife Shirley of Asheville, NC.
Mr. Crockett graduated from Graham High School in 1952 and then enlisted in the U.S. Navy to serve his country during the Korean War while assigned to the USS Clarence K. Bronson as well as the USS Black and completing a world tour. Upon his discharge, he returned to Bluefield, VA for 52 years and then relocated to Roanoke, VA in 2008. He graduated from Bluefield State College and Radford University with degrees in Education and Education Administration. He retired from the position of Principal at Graham High School in 1999, after working in the Tazewell County school system as teacher, coach, assistant principal, assistant supervisor, and principal for nearly 30 years. He also briefly owned and managed retail businesses in Bluefield, VA.
Serving our Lord came first in his life. He was a lifelong member of Graham Christian Church in Bluefield, where he served in many capacities. More recently he was a member of Bonsack Baptist Church in Roanoke. He loved helping people, touched countless lives, and set an example for others to follow. He cherished his family and lived life to the fullest enjoying family celebrations and trips, Graham High School sports, Bluefield Orioles baseball, Harley Davidson motorcycles, nice cars, gardening, fishing and spending winters in Punta Gorda, FL.
A memorial service will be held at Graham Christian Church in Bluefield, VA, on Saturday, April 7, with family visitation starting at 1:00 followed by the service at 2:00.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Joash Fund at Graham Christian Church in Bluefield, or the Food Pantry at Bonsack Baptist Church in Roanoke.
