Tribute

Kathryn (Kay) Armstrong Johnson, of Roanoke Virginia, was born in Winchester, Virginia July 9, 1939. She was the daughter of William C. Armstrong Jr. and Kathryn Borden Armstrong. She was predeceased by her sister, Sarah Lou Reid and her parents.

Kay grew up in Front Royal, Virginia and graduated from Warren County High School in 1957. She attended Westhampton College, Richmond, Virginia and received an Associate Degree in Medical Records from Central Virginia Community in Lynchburg, Virginia. She was employed by Carilion Clinic for 26 years in the Medical Education Administration.

Kay was a member of Christ Episcopal Church and the Roanoke Rose Society. She loved to sing and over the years was a member of several church choirs and choral groups. She loved to grow roses and take photographs of family and friends. She especially enjoyed sharing the roses she and her husband, Ernie Shelley, grew and sharing copies of the photographs. Kay was also a valued coworker, generous listener and especially loyal friend.

She was preceded in death by her husband Ernest L. Shelley Jr. of Roanoke, Virginia.

She is survived by son Garland Edward (Eddie) Johnson III and Denise Buck of Alexandria, Virginia; grandsons Tyler Johnson and Landin Johnson and wife Kelley and step great grandchildren Ethan Brantley, Jackson Brantley and Dabnie Brantley of Richmond, Virginia; son William (Billy) Johnson and wife Penny of Roanoke, Virginia; granddaughters Rachel Johnson of Des Moines, Iowa and Charlotte Johnson of Richmond, Virginia. She is also survived by stepson Eric Shelley of Roanoke, Virginia and stepdaughter Rebecca Shelley and husband Craig Ricketts and step grandchildren Olivia Ricketts and Andrew Ricketts of Roanoke Virginia. Also surviving are a niece, Susan Leigh Reid-Car and husband Woody of Midlothian, Virginia and nephew Michael Reid and wife Andrea of Manassas, Virginia. Several grand nephews and nieces also survive. Also, former daughter-in-law’s Jenny Johnson of Henrico, Virginia and Pam Johnson of Simpsonville, South Carolina, as well as several special Borden cousins.

A celebration of Kay’s life will be held at 12 pm, Saturday, February 19, 2022 at Christ Episcopal Church Roanoke 1101 Franklin Road SW Roanoke, VA 24016 with Reverend Alexander D. Macphail officiating.

In lieu of flowers the family asks any donations to be made to Christ Episcopal Church in Roanoke Virginia.
