Tribute

Kathryn Diane Akey
Our beloved “Katie” “Kay” entered into eternal peace on January 25, 2021 and reunited with her husband and soulmate of 57 years Michael R. Akey “My Mike.”
She was born in Rochester NY September 14, 1935, the youngest child of Mildred Haight and George Ingham Northrup. Predeceased by her sisters Doris (Vasey) and Nancy (Maier), brother Robert Northrup, and beloved niece Debbie Duffy and nephew Tom Vasey.

Kay is survived by nieces Carol Amburgey (Tandy), Paula Rolfe (Tim), and Diane Akey Collard (Steve) and nephews Robert Northrup (Val), Douglas Northrup (Julie), Jim Northrup (Betsey) and Michael Akey, several grandnieces and grandnephews including Adam Amburgey, Peter Amburgey, Doris Vasey, Sarah Duffy Clinton, AJ Duffy, Bill Vasey, Tom Vasey.

Katie was also great aunt Kay to many beloved great grandnieces and great grandnephews across the US. She loved them all. She had a special relationship with great grandnephew Corbin Amburgey, age 7, from Virginia.
Katie will be missed by many close friends and loved ones including Chris Cameron, sister-in-law Ruth Akey, the extended Duffy family, the Sweeney family, and the Vasey family along with many in law relatives. Many friends across the country from her online Gold Token group. They have been great company for her especially during this pandemic.

Katie and Mike owned a cottage “Camp” on Bullhead Pond in Adirondacks where they graciously entertained and welcomed family members and friends over 4 decades. Such fun times, holidays, meals, games, fishing and water fun for 4 generations! Lifetime memories that will always unite us. We are forever grateful.
Kay also lived in Cape Coral FL and most recently Vinton Virginia. She was a loving and beloved nanny to families in FL and VA shaping young minds and hearts. Kay and Mike opened their hearts and their homes to many. They loved their pets dearly, adopted a few.

Those wishing to may honor Kay and Mike may contribute to Angels of Assisi 415 Campbell Ave SW Roanoke VA 24016 (www.angelsofassisi.org) toward their building fund in her name. She loved the work they do to save and rehabilitate damaged and homeless animals.

She will be interred in Garland Cemetery where generations of her relatives are buried.

A graveside celebration of her life will be scheduled when the cemetery reopens this spring.
