Georgetta “Abby” Abbott Welsh, age 94, of Roanoke, Virginia passed away at home on March 17, 2023.
Abby was born in Roanoke on July 17, 1928, daughter to Howard Hampton and Thelma Joyner Abbott of Catawba, Virginia. She grew up in Roanoke City and graduated from Jefferson Senior High School (’47). She earned her Bachelors in education at Roanoke College, where she was a member of the Alpha Psi Omega and Tau Kappa Alpha honorary national fraternities, and met her future husband James Welsh (‘53). On June 12, 1954, they wed at St. John’s Episcopal Church in Roanoke. They both shared a passion for education and lifelong learning that was held to the very last. Forty years of her life were dedicated to educating others as an elementary school teacher and reading specialist and she earned her MA in English from Hollins University in 1974. She lived several places, but the Appalachian Mountains of southwest Virginia were always her beloved home and it was there that she spent the majority of her life.
Abby is survived by her daughter Hannah Welsh Donahue of Roanoke, VA as well as her granddaughter Sarah Reid Gibbons, and spouse Lane Daniel Gibbons.
She is preceded in death by her husband James Carroll Welsh and her parents.
The family wishes to specially thank all of the friends, care givers, and family who have offered support to them and Abby during this time.
A private vigil will be held in her honor at Christ Episcopal Church followed by a memorial service at her home. At a later date, funeral rites will be held at Sherwood Memorial Park where her ashes will be laid to rest next to her husband.
